Burt Bertram, Ed. D.

Differences, misunderstanding, and conflict are a natural part of all human relationships. However, when misunderstanding and frustration become chronic, an uneasy tension settles into the workplace. In-groups and out-groups are formed and people "hunker-down" and wait to see how it will all work out. When conflict is chronic, every relationship in the group becomes suspect. Strained and frayed relationships rob the organization of time, opportunities, creativity, productivity and money. Career satisfaction, pride of accomplishment, and self esteem are additional casualties of unresolved conflict.

Disabling conflict can occur at all levels. No one is immune. Owners, partners, senior and junior executives, professionals, managers, supervisors, and line staff - all are equally capable of being a party to unresolved conflict. Organizations can only "live with it" so long. Eventually, the toll from unresolved conflict becomes too high.

Something must be done! While it is impossible to guarantee resolution of every conflict, I will design a conflict resolution environment that is based on “dialogue.” The essence of dialogue involves respectful communication where the goal is to understand and be understood…not to debate, compete, or win. In this environment defensiveness is reduced and creative solutions are possible.

Conflict Resolution involves creating an atmosphere where…

•  discussion is safe and respectful
•  participation is invited
•  underlying issues are identified
•  creativity is encouraged
•  common ground is realizable
•  positive action is possible

•  Group Facilitation
